Biodegradable trash bags are made from plant-based materials such as PLA (polylactic acid), PBAT and corn starch, which microorganisms can break down. Note that biodegradable and compostable are not the same thing — the latter carries defined standards and a certification threshold, covered on our compostable trash bags page.

Biodegradable trash bags: common questions
They are different claims. Biodegradable means the material can be broken down by microorganisms. Compostable means it must fully break down within a set time leaving no toxic residue or visible plastic fragments, and there are standards such as EN 13432 that can verify it. Commonly a combination of PLA (polylactic acid), PBAT and corn starch. The ratio affects strength, softness and how it breaks down, so the right blend is confirmed against your use and target market.
Plant-based materials are commonly 15 to 60 micron. Because the material behaves differently from polyethylene, the thickness needed for the same load is different too, and we confirm it against the actual use.
For compostable grades we hold EN 13432, ASTM D6400, BPI, OK Compost, AS 4736 and AS 5810, so we can produce to a specified market requirement. If you only need general biodegradability, the specification can be confirmed separately.
