BPI Certification

The Biodegradable Products Institute is the North American body promoting compostable certification. Its programme is based on ASTM D6400 and verified through third-party laboratories and independent review.

About this product

What the certification requires

On top of the ASTM D6400 test requirements, BPI certification adds third-party laboratory verification, formulation review and artwork review — so it is more than obtaining a test report.

  • Disintegration and biodegradation: per ASTM D6400, at least 90% converted to carbon dioxide within 180 days
  • Fluorinated chemicals: no intentionally added fluorinated chemicals since 2020, with total organic fluorine below 100 ppm
  • Testing must be by a BPI-approved laboratory with independent review; certification is valid for three years

FAQ

BPI certification: common questions

ASTM writes the standard, defining the test methods and the criteria for compostability. BPI certifies, through third-party testing and review, that a product actually meets that standard. The two are related but not interchangeable.
